Florida Notice of Violation vs Uniform Traffic Citation

Florida uses a two-step mailing for some camera programs: a Notice of Violation first, then a Uniform Traffic Citation if the NOV is not resolved in time. Those two papers are not the same. The red-light statute and the school-zone speed statute are also not the same. Read which one is printed on your notice. Confirm what your paper says.

US overview: What a mailed camera notice is.

Red-light cameras — Fla. Stat. § 316.0083 (do not mix with 316.1896)

Florida Statutes 316.0083 (2026, retrieved 10 Sep 2026): a notification (notice of violation) is sent by first-class mail to the registered owner; mailing constitutes notification. To avoid issuance of a traffic citation, the owner must pay a $158 penalty, furnish an affidavit, or request a hearing within 60 days following the date of the notification. If that does not happen, a traffic citation may be issued by certified mail. That is the statute’s statement, not an instruction from us.

Florida Statutes 322.27 (2026): when enforced by a traffic infraction enforcement officer, points may not be imposed for that red-light failure-to-stop under the TIEO path stated there. An officer-issued signal ticket is a different track. That is the statute’s statement for that TIEO path only. Do not write “Florida camera tickets never add points.”

School-zone speed cameras — Fla. Stat. § 316.1896 (do not mix with 316.0083)

Florida Statutes 316.1896 (2026, retrieved 10 Sep 2026): notice to the registered owner. The owner must pay the penalty under s. 318.18(3)(d), furnish an affidavit, or request a hearing within 30 days after the date of the notice of violation to avoid court fees, costs, and issuance of a Uniform Traffic Citation. Florida Statutes 318.18(3)(d): when enforced by a traffic infraction enforcement officer under 316.1896, the fine is $100. That is the statute’s statement, not an instruction from us.

Florida Statutes 322.27 (2026): points may not be imposed for that TIEO school-zone / unlawful-speed camera violation under the path stated there. Officer-issued speeding is a different track.
